Mystery People – who are these people and how are they related?

If you have any additional information on any of these individuals please e-mail Ginny Chung with the details.

  • ASKABY, ELINA -  Elina Askaby, age 30 born in Germany is listed living with Carl Dirksmeier in 1855 Massachusetts State Census.  It is presumed that she was the nanny taking care of Carl’s 2 children from his first and second wives.   What happened to her after Carl remarried?  Was she a relative?  Carl remarried 2 years later to Theresa Plumer.  Elina did not show up on the 1860 census at that time.
  • CAMPBELL, ROSE ANN -Rose Ann Campbell is listed as godmother to Catherine Donahoe in 1872.  I have not the faintest idea how this woman may be connected to the Donahoe and Parker family.
    • Checking the city directories may uncover some additional clues to determine whom this woman was.
    • Checking vital records for death or marriage of Rose Ann Campbells may also bear some further clues.

  • CROWLEY, MICHAEL -Michael Crowley is listed as godfather to Mary Donahoe in 1862.  Mary is the daughter of Patrick Donahoe and Mary Parker.   Margaret Cotter writes, “ Superintendent of Boston Police Michael Crowley had a son, Arthur, who was a buddy of (Babe Ruth)- ballplayer, a daughter who died (dieting).  I don’t know if he had any more children. Michael Crowley was a cousin to my father (Daniel Donahoe).  It must have been his father who was Aunt Mame’s godfather as the Michael Crowley I knew was the same age or younger than Aunt Mame. “

"I think the Crowley’s came from Lawrence, Mass.  They were all at my uncle Bill's wake, including Superintendent Crowley, who asked me, 'which one is your father...Bill, Dan or Joe?' recalled Margaret Donahoe Cotter.
Checking the 1900 Census we find 1 possible candidate each for the godfather and the son, which Margaret remembers.  Below, based off of 1880, 1900, and 1920 census are their family outlines.

·       On June 10, 1858 John J Crowley(22) born in England occupation RR Switchman parents Edward and Mary ---  married Catherine L Wren (17) born in Boston parents Daniel and Ann by P. F Lyndon – South Boston

·        In 1867 John and Catherine Crowley lived at 24 Athens Drive and John is listed as a switchman.

·       Patrick Donahoe lived at 12 Oneida St in 1892, which is near Michael and Joanna Crowley.

·       May 5 1896 John J Crowley – car inspector age 61 died of alcoholism and heart disease living at 13 Wrentham St

·       Given that it was Michael son of John J. Crowley which my aunt recalls as a cousin, I suspect that John J and Michael (husband of Joanna) must have been related.  They were not brothers because they listed different parents on their respective marriage records.

o   Checking vital records for death of Michael Crowley, Joanna Crowley, John Crowley and Catherine Crowley may bear some further clues.

§  Michael Crowley died October 5, 1905 age 61 born in Ire - parents Timothy Crowly and Mary Donovan - buried in Calvary

§  Michael Crowley died Oct 26 1905 age 69 - widow born in Ire of 115 Union Park St - parents Michael Crowley and Honora Sweeney of Ire.  Buried in Dorchester (old) - undertaker Samuel Sullivan

§  Michael Crowley of 92 Methuen St, Lawrence died age 60 on Jun 26 1907 - smothered by smoke - accidental - buried in Immaculate Conception in Lawrence

§  Michael Crowley of 17 Harbor View St died Oct 19 1910 age 74 - parents Denis and Mary Crowley buried in New Calvary.

§  Tried to locate a Death Joanna Crowley 1880-1900 - no possible matches found

o   I suspect the connection is back in Ire - if one exists.

§  Daniel Crowley born 1871 living at 24 Athens St – father was a switchman

§  Daniel Crowley age 28 married Mary Ryan age 25 (dau Patrick and Ellen Murray) 1898 – both listed as born in Ireland

§  Daniel  F Crowley age 35 married Mary F Pugh age 27 on Oct 9 1907 – he lived at 13 Wrentham St – Fireman parenst John J Crowley and Catherine L Wrenn – bride’s parents Frank W Pugh and Mary F Dwyer – by Rev Edward J Fraher of 97 South St

§  1860 Michael and Joanna Crowley were living on 680 Washington St per Williams birth record

DUGAN, MARGARET - Margaret Dugan is listed as godmother to Ellen Donaohe in 1860. Ellen is the daughter of Patrick Donahoe and Mary Parker.  There was an Ellen Dugan who was a widow and lived next door to Patrick and Mary Donahoe at 33 Seneca St. Was she a relative or just a neighbor?

Dugan families who lived near the Donahoe family during this timeframe:
1861-1862  Ellen Dugan  33 Seneca St.<<<<< right next door
1863  Jerimiah Dugan 5 Oneida St

HEALY/DONAHOE/BUCKLEY - In the last correspondence I received from Margaret Donahoe Cotter, she writes:

Dear Ginny,
......
He also had 3 old maid cousins that owned a lot of property in Roxbury, Mary Sissy, Hannah and Lena, they loved cats until Lena got scratched by one got blood poison and died.  I can’t think of their last name.  If there is anything I forgot, let me know as I may be repeating. Aunt Margaret

This could also be Patrick Donahoe’s brother Thomas children – I believe Johanna, Mary and Ellen living at 24 Sharon St upon their death – unmarried is the trio Margaret referred to..

KILROY, BRIDGET and MARGARET
Bridget Kilroy's name was uncovered searching the cemetery records of Catherine Donnelly. Checking her death record, she was the daughter of Patrick and Mary Kilroy of Ire. She was single, age 32 and was living on Prentis St at the time of her death in 1882. Catherine Lyon’s mother’s maiden name was Kilroy. They were probably cousins but further research will determine the actual relationship.  In 1870 a possible match found in Ward 9, page 55.  There was a Bridget Kilroy age 24 - Domestic Help born in Ire living with the Fox family (Charles A - 29, Emma - 23, Emma - 1)

Kilroy, Margaret 65 December 17 1890 Mt. Calvary, Section 5 Range 40 is also buried there.  Her death record states she died Dec 16 1890 of old age.  She lived at Reimo Place and was born in Ire to John Kelley and Catharine Murray.  She was married.

Checking the 1870 census - I found no matches for Margaret Kilroy.  Checking the 1880 census, I find ... Could this be mother/daughter? If so, it still doesn't explain the relationship to Catherine Lyons or James Fallon?

1880 Census Place: Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts  Source: FHL Film 1254560  National Archives Film T9-0560     Page 387C   This is on Prentis St living sharing a house with Michael and Ann Donnelly and their children (of which a James is listed).  Now James lists a different set of parents when he married Catherine Lyons, just yet one more coincidence.

o   James Fallon’s mother is listed as MARY KILROY.  So Bridget and Margaret are probably an aunt and/or cousin.  Not sure how to prove this.

LYONS, CATHERINE (Ward, Donnelly)-  Catherine Lyons was first found as a result of a query to a distant cousin, Charlie Dowd. He had been searching through his parent’s papers and came across a burial plot purchased by his grandfather, James Fallon in 1889. In  1903 he buried a woman named Catherine DONNELLY there. Catherine Donnelly, nee Ward, husband James, father Lawrence, mother Mary Kilroy died July 1, 1903 of exhaustion.  She was a resident of the Insane Hospital for the last for the last 2 years of her life.  Her death record was very obscure and I found it had her first husbands surname as her maiden name. Searching the 1900 census record and then the 1880, 1920, I was able to determine that Catherine Donnelly was married previously to someone name WARD. Finding that marriage record, Catherine's true maiden name was uncovered as Lyon. Catherine Lyon Ward Donnelly's parents were listed as Lawrence Fallon and Mary Kilroy on her death record and Timothy and Jane Lyons on her marriage record.  How could Catherine be connected to  James Fallon?      Finding further information on the Ward descendants may uncover the mystery?

McDONALD, Catherine –Catherine is listed as godmother to James Joseph Tulish in 1889.  I have not the faintest idea how this woman may be connected to the Tulish and Fallon

In each of Daniel and Margarets other children one of the godparents were on the father’s side and the other on the mother’s side. So does that make the likelihood Catherine is a Fallon, Kilroy connection?

1.     Mary F Tulish    Aug 15 1886 Our Lady Perpetual Help John Donohoe -  paternal cousin - son of Maria Thules Donoghue living in Lowell, Katie Fallon - mother’s sister

2.     James J. Tulish   Mar 3 1889  St James the Greater  Cornelius Leary Father brother-in-law Catharine McDonald

3.     Margaret Elisabeth Tulish  July 13 1890 St. Joseph’s Roxbury Jacobs Fallon - mother's brother Catharine Grady - Father's sisters -Thomas Grady's wife

4.     Alice Tulish  Jul 26 1896  All Saints Church  Cornelius O’Leary Father brother-in-law Margarita Fallon - Mother’s sister

Looking for possible Fallon cousins. I find 3 potential siblings and look one is married to a John McDonald???  Could it be????

MCGOVERAN, MARGARET - Margaret McGoveran is listed as godmother to Patrick Donahoe and Mary Parker’s last child, Joseph Patrick Donahoe in 1876.  At this time I haven’t faintest what the connection, if any, Margaret McGoveran has to this family.  Checking the 1880 Census index did not uncover possible candidates.

There was a Magaret Magovern who died in 1895 age 53 maiden name Connolly.

O’NEILL  C., O’NEILL MICHAEL,O’NEILL PATRICK - These 3 O’Neill’s showed up as sponsors to various children of Patrick Donahoe and Mary Parker in 1857 and then again in 1876.  Purely by the fact that they all had the same surname makes me wonder if they were related.  Checking the 1860 census for Massachusetts I find a Michael O’Neill approximately the same age as Patrick and Mary.  They also have a son Patrick who 19 years later may have been the godfather to Joseph Patrick Donahoe.

O’NEILL , THOMAS ‘TIP” - I stumbled upon the fact that Thomas ‘Tip” O’Neill, a Boston native; family came from the Mallow Cork area.  Could the 2 O’Neill families be connected?  Below is a brief biography of the Speaker of the House.  Further investigation will be needed to determine if these 2 O’Neill families are connected.

O'Neill JR., who was speaker of the U.S.House of Representatives from  1976 - 1987 has his roots firmly entrenched in Mallow.  Mr.O'Neill's great great grandparents, Daniel O'Connell and Catherine Quinlan, were married in Mallow on 16th August 1797. After her husband's death, in the 1820s, Catherine immigrated to America with some of her children. She remained there for about 50 years. In her 100th year she returned to her native Mallow, where she died at the great age of 103 years, in or about the year 1870. She was buried next to her husband, Daniel, in Cork Ire.

Joanna Connell - daughter of Daniel and Catherine, married John O'Neill in St. Mary’s Church on October 30th 1822 in Cork, Ire.  They lived at Gallows Lane, which was at the East End of the town close to Mallow Castle. Some of the children of this marriage were baptized in Mallow. The record of their son Patrick's baptism has not been found, but it is known that he was born in Mallow in 1832.

Patrick married Julia Fox, who was born in Mallow in 1839. Around 1845 Patrick, together with his brothers Michael and John, left for the United States to work with the New England Brick Co. They worked as laborers in the Brickyards and this was very tough physical work. Patrick and Julia's son, Thomas P. O'Neill, married Rose Anne Tolan. They had three children, the youngest being Thomas 'Tip', born 9th December 1912 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He graduated from Boston College in 1936 with a B.A. degree. 'Tip' married Mildred Anne Miller on 17th June 1941. They had five children. Formerly engaged in the insurance business, he began his political career in 1936 when he was elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives. He served until 1952. During his tenure in the  Massachusetts legislature he served as Minority Leader (1947 - 1948) and was elected as the first
Democratic Speaker of the Massachusetts House in 1948. In 1952 he was elected to the 83rd Congress, succeeding the late President John F. Kennedy. Mr. O'Neill represented the 8th District of Massachusetts in the U.S. House of Representatives for 16 consecutive terms.

First appointed House Majority Whip in 1971, he served in that capacity during the 92nd Congress. In 1973 he was elected House Majority Leader, this position he held until he was elected Speaker in 1977. Speaker O'Neill had received 18 honorary degrees from various colleges throughout the country and had been presented with numerous Community Service Awards. In October 1986 he retired as Speaker of the House of Representatives. Tip O'Neill died on 6th January 1994. He was buried on Monday, January 10th, in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Harwichport, Cape Cod

SCANLON, LILLIAN - Frances Welz recalls a Lily or Lillian Drew who was an aunt who lived in Boston.  Her maiden name was Scanlon. She does not recall if they had any children.  Who is this Lillian and is she related to our Scanlon family?    Checking the Massachusetts death certificates, we find Lillian M Drew  (born Scanlon).  She died February 10, 1981 while residing at Washington St, Reading.  She was 92 years old (born April 3, 1888).  She was the widow of Edmund Drew.  Her parents are listed as Michael McTague and Annie E Cullen of Ire.  So where did the Scanlon name come from?   Maybe talking to her son, Lawrence may shed some light on this woman and how she may be connected to either the Spellman or the Scanlon line.

SINGLETON, DENNIS AND GRACE - Both Dennis and Grace Singleton have been listed as godparents to Patrick Donahoe and Mary Parker’s children.  Researching further, Dennis Singleton was Grace’s husband. Mary Parker’s mother’s maiden name was SINGLETON, so there is probably a connection on the PARKER side with Dennis.  Dennis and Grace had 3 known children born in Massachusetts, a daughter Grace who died as a young child and a son Dennis who died as a young man without any further children, and a son Edward J found on the 1880 census.  Grace’s surname is listed as McGrath on her death record, but Hetherman on her children’s baptismal records.  Contacting the Mallow Heritage center they located another 3 children.  Dennis and Grace are buried in the Donahoe plot in Holyhood Cemetery.

SINGLETON, THOMAS -  husband of Mary Donahoe is said to be a 3rd cousin or such.  Mary's great grandmother was Catherine Singleton Parker.  Some limited  research has been done to corroborate if the relationship existed before the marriage.  If it exists it back in Ireland and the records are not available to substantiate this claim. Thomas had at least 11 siblings who were the majority born in Peabody, Mass.  Thomas' parents names were John Singleton and Mary O'Leary. They immigrated to Boston in 1870.  Further details can be found under the DONAHOE PDF document.  A quick check with the Mallow Heritage Center uncovered another generations, but they were unable to go back further although they found possible candidates for both Jeremiah and Catherine but could not validate.

SPELLMAN, BRIDGET

I’ve been slowly gathering information on the Spellman families which I believe were connected to this Scanlon family.  Spellman was a very common name in Boston around the turn of the century so it will be difficult to determine all of the Spellmans who may have been connected to this Scanlon family.  I have been concentrating on those Spellmans who I can place with this Scanlon family.

Bridget Spelman first showed her face in the 1900 census of Belinda Keliher.  She was listed as Belinda’s aunt in the census and immigrating to US in 1870.  She later shared her home with Belinda’s sister Catherine Coyle.  Bridget never married and died in 1907.

Searching probate court, I found her will in 1907. She identifies the Scanlon siblings (Belinda Brennan of Boston, Thomas Scanlon of Boston, Patrick Scanlon of Worcester, Catherine F Coyle of Boston and Agnes Scanlon of Milton) as her nephews and nieces.   She bequeathed the majority of her estate to her niece Catherine F. Coyle, naming as executor, Catherine’s husband Thomas.  At the time of her death, Bridget was living with Catherine and Thomas Coyle.

There were 2 references of Bridget Spellman as aunt to the Scanlon children, the census, and then again in the will.  Given the SPELLMAN surname matched Mary Spelman Scanlon’s maiden name, I initially suspected that Bridget and Mary Spelman Scanlon may have been sisters.  However on Bridget's death certificate it lists her parents as Thomas Spellman and Bridget Scanlon.  This could be wrong, but at this time I have no proof of that. There was a Bridget Spelman  born on January 8 1865 to Thomas Spelman and Mary Higgins in Tobercurry, Sligo, and Ire.  Checking the 1880 census and the city directories may uncover further information on this woman.

SPELLMAN, DOMINIK

Dominik is listed as the godfather to Thomas Scanlon’s children.  There are 3 possible connections between this family and that of the Scanlon family.

    1. The first is that Spellman is the maiden name of Thomas Scanlon mother.
    2. The second surfaced from a discussion of Dominik’s niece Frances Welz Shiner.  She mentioned that her Aunt Margaret Spellman married James Gilmartin.  James Gilmartin was the younger brother of Catherine Gilmartin who had married Thomas Scanlon.  I am verifying this through vital records.  But if it is true, Dominik Spellman was still listed as godparent to Thomas’ daughter Agnes in 1898, long before the marriage of his sister Margaret to James Gilmartin.
    3. The third connection found was that Frances Welz Shiner, daughter of Dominik’s sister Mary Ann Spellman, godmother was Lizzie Coyle.  Lizzie Coyle was in fact, the daughter of Catherine Scanlon Coyle.  Frances stated that her mother had named relatives for all of her children?s godparents.  This third connection continues to support that the SPELLMAN and SCANLON may have been distant cousins.

This family immigrated to Boston in 1880 with their eldest being born in Ire according to the census.  On September 15, 1880 there was a Dominick Spellman who entered Boston on the S.S. Austrian from Londonderry, Ire.  His age is 26.  On the same ship, also from Londonderry was a woman Mary Spellman, age 22.  Could this be our Dominik Spellman and his wife?  If so, how did they show up in the 1880 census?

Dominick Spellman married Mary Mahar in Ire.  Dominik is listed as a teamster in the brewery business.   He had at least 9 children, of which only 5 lived to adulthood.   There are very sketchy details on some of his children.
